SANITATION/ RECYCLING DEPARTMENT

 
 
 
TRASH COLLECTION

 

THE SANITATION DEPARTMENT COLLECTS REGULAR HOUSEHOLD TRASH ONCE PER WEEK.

 

The city does not collect Tires, Oil, or Paint or electronics.
 
 All trash should be kept in cans.
·        Garbage cans can be no larger than 34 gallons and can be either metal or plastic. ·        CANS CAN NOT WEIGH MORE THAN 50 LB.
·        The cans are the responsibility of the homeowner.
·        You will be asked to replace cans when they are cracked or broken.
·        Cans can not be placed out more than 24 hours before collection day and must be removed after pickup.
·        On pickup days cans have to be placed out before 7:00AM. Plastic bags can be used but the city is not responsible for cleanup due to torn bags.
·        No compostable materials should be placed in cans or plastic bags.

 

WHEN A HOLIDAY FALLS ON YOUR COLLECTION DAY, PICKUP WILL BE THE NEXT DAY.

 

Our men will be doing 2 days collection, so make sure you have your trash out by 7:00AM. They may not get to your house until late afternoon or early evening.

 

If you set out your trash late, call our office (942-6121) and we will try to pick up your trash by the end of the day.

 

 

 

In response to a new state law Starting January 1, 2011,the City will no longer pickup electronics curside. Electronics can be brought to the City Yard for recycling at no cost.
 

  

RECYCLING COLLECTION

RECYCLING COLLECTION IS ON THE SAME DAY AS YOUR TRASH PICKUP.

 

All recycling stops are in front of the house. No recycling will be collected from alleys.

All persons recycling must use bins that have been provided by the city.

Items that are collected by the city include: newspaper, cardboard, glass and plastic containers, metal and aluminum cans.

 

Cardboard boxes:

  • must have all Styrofoam and plastic removed.
  • They must be broken down and cut up.
  • Cardboard can be placed under the recycle bin.

 

Glass:

  • No broken glass should be placed inside the bin.

Cans:

  • Please do not place opened lids in the bin.

Newspaper:

  • Should be placed in the bottom of the bin or in a paper bag to prevent wind from blowing papers into your neighbors yard.

 

 

PLEASE DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS TO PLACE YOUR RECYCLING IN.

BINS THAT HAVE TRASH OR PLASTIC WILL BE LEFT.

 

IF YOU LOSE A BIN OR YOURS IS DAMAGED, OR YOU ARE A NEW RESIDENT, YOU CAN OBTAIN A NEW ONE BY STOPPING BY OUR OFFICE, AT THE CITY YARD. (1840 State Hway 130).

YOU MUST COME IN AND SIGN A FORM FOR A NEW BIN. THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR A NEW BIN.
 
Latex Paint Recycling
The City of Hobart Latex Paint Recycling Center is now open for disposal of latex paint. Paint must be brought to the facility. No latex paint will be collected curbside. Hours are Mon-Fri 7:00 - 2:45 AND Sat  8:00 until 11:45
 

 

 

 

CURBSIDE COMPOST PROGRAM
 

 The city offers a curbside Compost Program

Run by the Sanitation / Recycling Department.

 

The program runs from the second week in April until November 15th

  • Pickup is the same day as your trash.
  • Brown paper bags are provided by the city, for the program. Bags must be placed in front of your house. No alley collection.
  • No Plastic bags will be collected.
  •  Bags will be replaced (up to 5) as they are collected.
  • Bags can be picked up at the city yards (340 S. Shelby
  • Bags must not weigh more than 50LB.
  • Grass, Leaves, Garden waste or small branches can be placed in the bag.
  • No dirt will be accepted.
  • Bags should be placed out only on your collection day.
  • Bags that are set out all week will begin to compost and break apart.
  • Residents should mow grass on the day before pickup.

Those wanting to dispose of bags earlier can bring them to the city yard during regular business hours.

·        A permit is required to dump at the city yard.
Permits cost $10 and are valid January 1 to December 31.

 

  

SPECIAL PICKUPS

  

 Special pickups are Debris other than Household trash placed out for pickup.
 
·        These items are picked up separately.
·        They must be called in to be collected.
·        No Hazardous waste will be collected.
·        Large piles and cement will have a charge placed on them.
 
If there is a charge to be placed on the pickup you will be notified first. A form must be filled out and signed by the homeowner before collection.
 
·        No debris from remodeling or construction will be collected by the city.
·        If a charge is placed on a pickup, the charge will be placed on your sewer bill.
 
LARGE SPECIAL PICKUPS WILL HAVE A CHARGE FOR PICKUP

 

·        White goods are collected on Thursday or Friday of each week.

·        There is no Fee

·        This service requires a call to our office. 942-6121

·        Items collected include:

o       Washers

o       Dryers

o       Air Conditioners

o       Refrigerators

o       Freezers

o       Dishwashers
 
Items are taken to a recycling center in order to ensure safe disposal.
